Placement for the Class of 2007 at SIIB was a resounding success. The placement week was in first week of December’06 and in this period 112 students of MPIB were placed in 34 companies. Similarly 43 students of the MPABM program were placed in 11 companies. It must be highlighted here that a total of 69 companies had registered for the final process of MPIB and this figure stood at 22 for MPABM. Needless to say many of these companies had to leave empty handed.
As per the college policy, a survey was done amongst the final year students to know their sectoral preference in which IT/ITES and BFSI were the top draws. So the final line up of companies was skewed towards IT and BFSI. The major recruiter this year included
IT/ITES - Covansys, IBM, HP, Infosys, Wipro, i-Flex and Infosys BPO
FMCG – L’Oreal, ITC, SAB Miller, Asian Paints, Nerolac
Research and Consulting – Accenture, Deloitte, IMRB
BFSI – GE Money, HDFC Bank, Citi Group, ICICI Bank, Irevna Research, IDBI Bank, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, Kotak Mahindra Bank
Services – Thomas Cook, VFS
Manufacturing – Trident, Sterlite, John Deere
Agri Business – Monsanto, DSCL, HyperCity

In terms of numbers, IBM and Trident each picked 9 students from IB batch and Monsanto picked 4 students from ABM batch

As far as the statistics go, the highest salary was 11.75 lakh/pa for laterals and 10 lakh/pa for freshers for the IB batch. For the ABM batch the highest salary was 7.6 lakh/pa for freshers.
The average salary for the IB batch showed an increase of 30 % over the previous year. It stood at 7.55 lakh/pa as compared to 5.8 lakh/pa last year. Median salary stood at 7.20 lakh/ pa.
The average salary for the ABM grew by 49 % to 5.20 lakh/pa from previous year’s 3.5 lakh/pa. The median salary for the ABM batch stood at 5.05 lakh/pa.

The bigger picture this year however is not in figures. This year excellent profiles were offered to students. Apart from International Marketing and Supply Chain which is what SIIB is known for and which is what ITC-IBD, VFS, Ceat, Sterlite offered, students also got profiles as diverse as Corporate Finance, Domain Consulting, International Market Research, Product Development, Derivative Trading, Equity Research, Wealth Management, Treasury Management as well as core Sales and Marketing profiles. Also three excellent international business offers were made in manufacturing sector.

This year’s placement record reinforces SIIB’s place amongst top B Schools in India

The Department of Management Studies, IIT Madras recently concluded a spectacular placement season lasting just 3 days for the MBA batch of 2007. While 37 companies had confirmed their participation in the placement process, placements got over with the first 25 companies who came to campus. The recently concluded placement season was significant in a number of ways.

Foreign offers were made for the first time on campus. Bloomberg made 4 offers for their New York and Princeton offices, while Indigo Futures, a proprietary trading firm based in Gibraltar, made another 4 offers in the area of options modeling and futures trading for its Gibraltar, Singapore and Dubai offices. The average foreign salary offered on campus this year was USD 66,000 with Bloomberg topping the charts with USD 90,000.

On the domestic front, Goldman Sachs, Caterpillar, Schlumberger, Accenture, and KPMG were the big names added to the recruiter list this year. Other first time recruiters included Kotak Mahindra Bank, SBI Caps, ICRA Consulting, and HP, to name a few. Citibank, Caterpillar and IBM Business Consulting made the highest number of offers.

Finance, Operations and Consulting were the most preferred choices on campus this year.

The banking sector was represented by Citibank, Kotak Mahindra and SBI Capital Markets. Citibank recruited for both its Corporate Banking and Global Consumer Group divisions. Kotak offered profiles in private banking. SBI Capital Markets made attractive offers in the fields of investment banking while IBM and Caterpillar offered profiles in corporate finance.

Avalon Consulting, KPMG, IBM, Accenture and McKinsey KC offered consulting profiles. ICRA’s management consulting division, iMacs, recruited exclusively through PPOs. Caterpillar recruited heavily for their operations profiles including their famed Six Sigma programme. Exciting roles in Analytics were made by McKinsey KC, Grail Research and Hewlett Packard. Infosys and Wipro offered business analyst profiles across various verticals like retail, human capital management, pre-sales etc. Infosys BPO recruited for its Fixed Income Analytics Division.

Bajaj Auto, Henkel and Sterlite Optronics recruited for marketing profiles and HR profiles were offered by IBM, Bajaj, Caterpillar and Infosys.

The exciting lateral offers made on campus were another significant barometer of the success of this year’s placements. The marquis investment bank Goldman Sachs offered 3 profiles in Investment Banking and Global Investment Research including a lateral offer. Schlumberger offered operations profile for lateral hires. Grail Research (part of the Monitor Group), Accenture, IBM Consulting and Kotak Mahindra also made lateral offers. The average domestic salary offered was Rs. 7.8 lpa, a considerable jump compared to Rs. 6.2 lpa last year. The median salary this year was Rs. 7.0 lpa.

With a total of 90 offers being made, each student had 1.45 offers on hand. The placement team put in a tremendous amount of effort to ensure smooth running of the process, a fact which was well appreciated by all the participating companies. The Faculty Coordinator – Placements, DoMS IIT Madras, Dr. Sanghamitra Bhattacharya says, “The manner in which the placement process is handled at our department by the team of student coordinators is a shining example of what teamwork, dedication, intelligent and sensitive planning, coupled with sheer hard work - can achieve. In fact, our students are our best ambassadors in the industry, which is reinforced every year by the high profile companies which have been regularly participating in our placement process.”

The visiting companies were highly impressed with the process, the hospitality and the quality of students. Their fulsome praises and comments, some of which are highlighted below, reaffirm the impressions carried back by the companies at the conclusion of the process:

“[With so many good choices] I felt like a child in a candy shop” - Dr. Tarsem S. Jutla, Managing Director, Caterpillar India Ltd.

“Very bright and enthusiastic students… [had] an excellent experience and would love to recruit again” – Ms. Sandra Hutchins, Bloomberg LP.

“Quality of students is good. The process was well coordinated” – Apreeta Singh, Goldman Sachs.

The placement process at Shailesh J Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay broke new grounds to finish with the best ever placements season. Average salary increased by 24% compared to last year and touched Rs 9.71 lakhs with a median of Rs 9.5 lakhs. Nearly 10% of the batch was offered international profiles with Olam international offering the highest international salary of $85,000.The domestic salary reached a new high of Rs 13.2 Lakhs offered by a leading international SCM and retail consultancy firm. More than 40% of the batch became overnight millionaires even before graduating, breaching the coveted Rs 10 Lakh barrier! The strength of the placements can be gauged by the fact that only four students had a salary less than Rs 8 Lakhs.

Commenting on the placement process, Prof. S V D Nageswara Rao, Placement Co-Ordinator said “The strong response by top companies once again re-affirms faith of the industry in the strong academic program at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay. Students were spoilt for choice in terms of profiles and salaries and Placements Process 2007 provided a strong platform for them to launch their career in management.”

The placement season at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay had already kick started on a very bright note with many students receiving lucrative Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) from various companies. The Pre Placement Offers registered a huge increase this year as compared to the year before; with 37% of the batch having offers in hand even before the final placements started. Various renowned companies like Marico, RPG, Wipro, L’Oreal, Patni, eClerx, Cadbury, Tata Motors, CitiGroup have offered PPOs/PPIs.

Of the many companies which visited the campus, 41 companies made 141 offers averaging 2.43 offers per student. Regrettably, the rest of the companies had to leave empty handed. Kunal Kundaje, who was offered an international SCM role in Olam International says, “Getting international exposure after my MBA was my dream. As a fresher, the challenging SCM role offered by Olam is an icing on the cake for me. I couldn’t have been happier.”

The highlight of the placement process was the diverse profiles on offer by leading companies in Leadership, Private Equity, Investment Banking, Management & IT Consulting, Sales and Marketing. Among the new companies that visited campus for the first time were industry leaders like CTS, ECS, Dell, Deloitte, GE, HSBC, Intel, SAP. Regular recruiters in the field of IT, FMCG, Operations, Banking and Finance like Accenture, Citigroup, IBM, Infosys, JPMC, Marico, RPG, TSMG, Wipro and others came back to campus to pick up the outstanding talent on offer during the placement process. Shreevardhan Kabra, student, SJMSOM, IIT Bombay, offered a consulting profile in Deloitte, was quoted as saying: “Deloitte is one of the international leaders in the consulting domain and this job has opened up new avenues for me. I’m looking forward to work with the very best in the world.”

This year’s recruitments at the SJMSOM, IIT Bombay are proof of the depth of talent and reflect how the students are being treated as the best of the best by the leading companies of the world.

Goa Institute of Management (GIM) is one of the premier B-Schools in India consistently ranked among the top few in most surveys. The thrilling once in a year experience that every B-School looks forward to, that is, the placement week, is finally over at GIM.

Placements for the Class of 2007 started on 15th of December and ended late in the evening, the next day. During this period, 116 students from different academic backgrounds with varying work experience were selected and placed in 31 companies. This year, main recruiters came from the IT, Consulting, Financial Services, Banking, Telecom and Automotive sectors.

A total of 193 offers were made to 116 students. The IT sector was the largest recruiter with Infosys Technologies (25 offers), Cognizant Technology Solutions (24 offers) and IBM (11 offers) giving highest number of offers. Some of the first time recruiters this year were Accenture, Deloitte, Idea Cellular, HP, HSBC Bank, Hutch, Madura Garments and Tata Motors. A total of 78 companies showed interest in recruiting students from GIM and 47 were slotted for the final placement process. Of these, only 31 companies could recruit GIM students.

The average salary showed an increase of 22.13% to Rs. 6.41 lakh per annum this year as against Rs.5.24 lakh last year. Similarly the highest (annual) salary offered was Rs. 9 lakh, as against Rs.8 lakh last year. The median salary this year was Rs. 6.5 lakh, with the least salary offered being Rs. 4 lakh.

The real story of Placements ‘07 was, however, not the salaries, but the job profiles that companies offered. Students rejected very high packages in preference of the profiles that constituted their dream jobs. Some of the interesting new profiles offered this year were Credit Risk Management, Bond and Derivative Modeling, Web Marketing, and Supply Chain Management Consulting; apart form usual Sales/Marketing, Relationship Management and Equity Research profiles. Kotak Securities International offered a foreign placement with an opening in their Dubai operations.

The recruitment for summer internships is also progressing at full steam with big names like Yahoo and Deloitte offering posts to students with stipends as high as Rs.45,000 per month. Also, web startups like Pagalguy.com have offered unique profiles, indicating the emergence of new career options after MBA.

Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) is among the very few privileged B-schools in India to be on the A+ list of recruiters. XIMB has had a tradition of nurturing well groomed managers and placing them in some of the best companies across various sectors. Good placements give a jumpstart to students making a foray into the corporate world which in turn earns the institute credibility and recognition in the industry.

The fact that the corporate world trusts ‘Brand XIMB’ for quality recruitments is obvious from the impressive placements record that XIMB has. This year was yet another feather in the cap for both Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) and Post Graduate Programme in Rural Management (PGPRM) batches of 2007. 100% placements were achieved for both courses on Day 1 of Xuberance 2007, annual campus placement season of XIMB. Considering the rigorous management training and social consciousness XIMB imparts to budding managers this comes as no big surprise.

In the case of PGDBM batch, a total of 98 companies across sectors had shown interest in recruiting students and 72 of them were slotted for the final placement process. Of these, only 63 were lucky to grab students.

New companies on campus included HLL, Dell International, Deloitte Consulting, UBS, HSBC Global Resourcing, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Idea Cellular, Hutch, Grow Talent, Centurion Bank of Punjab and many more.

Maximum representation was from the IT industry and included bigwigs like IBM, Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Mindtree, Wipro etc.

A total of 309 offers were made to the batch of 118 resulting in 2.62 offers per student. 33 students had Pre-Placement Offers / Interviews (PPOs/PPIs) from companies they had undergone their summer training with.

Companies coming up with the highest number of offers included TCS, Cognizant, Infosys, JP Morgan Chase, IBM, Kotak Bank while highest salaries were offered by Olam International, JP Morgan Chase, Dell International, Godrej, Accenture.

JP Morgan Chase, SBI Caps, Citifinancial, and UTI were major recruiters from the banking and financial services sector while Ernst & Young, Avalon Consulting, Deloitte Consulting, McKinsey Knowledge Centre were the bigwigs on campus for consulting recruitments.

The average salary for the batch rose by 23% and stood at Rs. 8.77 lakhs per annum. The average domestic salary was Rs.8.52 lakhs per annum while the median salary was Rs.8.5 lakhs per annum. Apart from offering the highest number of offers (7) in the banking & financial services sector, JP Morgan Chase also offered the highest domestic salary of Rs. 12.75 lakhs per annum to the PGDBM batch. The highest international offer made was by Olam International at US$ 85,000 per annum. Interestingly, there are 23 students securing a paycheck of over Rs. 9 lakhs per annum.

IT/ITES companies came up with the highest number of offers this year, closely followed by Sales & Marketing and Banking & Financial Services companies. Most students expressed their willingness to work in the IT sector with the highest number of accepted offers in this sector.

It is noteworthy that 35 students rejected a higher paying job offer in lieu of a job profile of their choice. The jobs offered were from varied profiles which included Investment Banking, Supply Chain Management Consulting, Wealth Management, Treasury Management, Talent Acquisition Manager, Area Sales Manager, Industrial Relations Manager, Channel Manager, Corporate Finance, among others.

For the rural management programme (PGPRM) at XIMB, 68 offers were made to the batch of 52, the per student offer being 1.3. The average salary for the PGPRM batch rose by 31% at Rs.5.1 lakhs per annum and the median salary being Rs.4.60 lakhs per annum. The highest salary offered this year was Rs. 8 lakhs per annum.

To recruit rural managers, the new companies on campus this year were ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, IFMR, Monsanto, GCMMF (Amul), RK Swamy BBDO, Christian Children Fund, and NANDI Foundation among others. Our regular recruiters; Coromandel Fertilisers Ltd., ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, SKS Microfinance, Tata Chemicals Ltd., HLFPPT once again registered their presence on campus.

The companies on campus represented the three key areas in rural management, namely, agribusiness, banking & insurance, and development & microfinance. On more than one occasion the profiles offered to the candidates were developed and designed mutually by the recruiter and the candidates, resulting in very challenging and enriching profiles.

Fr. E. Abraham, S.J., Director, XIMB, commended the efforts put in by everyone involved in making Xuberance 2007 a grand success. He was pleased with the quick and quality placements of the students this year. To quote him, “XIMB is an institute known for its excellence in imparting knowledge and producing socially sensitive managers. The current placements just highlight this point even more.”

Shravan Mukundan Nair, the student placement coordinator, recalls the days spent on planning for the event. He says “Coordinating even the smallest activity, to conduct the process smoothly, would not have been possible without the combined efforts of each and every student. I am happy that the efforts laid the foundation for superior placements this year.”

Placements are just the reflection of the academic environment, the pedagogy, the dedication of the students and how the industry views a B-school. XIMB Placements 2007 exhibit how the top organizations in various fields have immense faith in the stellar students of XIMB. Excellence, after all, is a habit at XIMB.

Compared to the levels of difficulty in the previous years, CAT 2006 was a relatively easy paper. The tricky bit was the English section. In this section many of the questions were ambiguous making it tough to know the right answer.

English Section:-

The main reason behind the difficulty of this section was that in the previous years this section had questions based on logic. However this year there were more questions based on assumptions and interpretations. This pretty much makes it clear that this section would be the deciding factor for CAT selections this year.

Data Interpretation :-

The DI sets were easy. All one needed to do was keep a calm head and analyse the data thouroughly to get the solutions. An individual with a strong DI base can expect to have high levels of accuracy..as high as a 100%.

Quant Section:-

The Maths section was a mix of both easy and tough questions. Proper planning and choice of questions would have made it pretty easy for one to crack it.Once again accuracy levels for this section is expected to be very high.

Our predictions:-

English section - 20-23 marks
Quant section - 28-32 marks
DI section - 30-33 marks
