GRE or GATE - Sandeep Reddy GATE A.I.R- 5
Sandeep
Before discussing about Gate or Gre let us put a question to ourselves. Why higher studies? After all what are u’r preferences? Whether money or job satisfaction or zeal for research. If u never thought in this way, now first think about all these things before you take a decision.
For an engineer there are lots of options to choose. Higher studies or MBA or a job in MNCs.all these options are good. But don’t make a decision only thinking of salaries. First asses’ u’r capabilities and first think about u’r interests. Each and every option will provide you good payment if u are dedicated. Now let us talk about higher studies.
Before selecting between gre and gate, u need to know some thing about the universities. In India there are some premier institutes providing Mtech like IISc, IITs.of course there are NITs too. But it’s better not to join those for MTech. Even in IITs IITg, IITr are rated low. So at last there are IISc, five IITs total six institutes providing excellent education. But there are thousands of aspirants in each and every branch. So now you imagine how tough it is to get in to these.
But it is not that difficult if u have a proper planning and dedication. Now let me tell you it’s not only GATE score that matters to get admission here in iits. It’s your interest towards subject and your practical knowledge that is u’r project that matters at the time of interview for admission. Even if you have less gate score and have a good project you can get admission easily. Let me tell you the procedure most of the IITs follow to take the students. First depending on the GATE score they will call some students it may be 1:5 or 1:6. Now from here onwards gate score is not given much importance. They will screen again by conducting a written test and then they will interview the candidate and now they will give the admission. Here in interview mostly u’r practical knowledge is tested. So u’r final year project plays a main role here, now let me tell u one thing that if u’r project is not related to u’r branch of interest (I meant the branch for which u have applied) then in most of the cases they will reject you. that is u have to be focused from u’r third year onwards towards u’r future and what they intend is you must have special interest towards the subject u must be motivated by u’r zeal for research in that field so it’s not the job opportunities or money that insists u to select the field.
So be aware of all the opportunities and all fields from third year onwards. Most of the people do the same mistake that after writing GATE or GRE they start choosing their field and college. this is absolutely ridiculous because you are trying to pass two years and I warn such people because to get admission in to IITs you need prior knowledge of u’r field as I said earlier and even in case of MS also if you want to get assistantship and any sort of aid, you need to have very good practical knowledge. So now if u choose to get in to higher studies first choose some fields and get some practical knowledge about them by spending some time in u’r laboratories. And of course most of the Indian engineering colleges do not provide good faculty and better infrastructure but u must make use of available resources. Read some magazines related to u’r field of interest.
now coming to research IISc is the best institute in INDIA for research and here admission is solely based on gate score only but in most of the cases only top 15 (or some times top 10 only) rankers can get admission here . so before choosing MS or MTech you need check in which universities u’r field of interest is available and whether the course content is up to date or not and u need to check the faculty also. And let me tell u one more thing, in India shifting from one branch to other is the most difficult thing that is lot of questions will be asked by interviewer about changing of branch so if u are desperate to shift from one branch to other it is better to take the branch paper in GATE. But it is not at all easy because in most of the cases you do not know basics. for example if u are from electrical back ground and want to get in to communication field then it’s better to take EC paper rather than EE paper if u r capable of writing it. But don’t be scared by all these things. even if u write EE paper u may have chances to get communication but u need to have good practical and theoretical knowledge of communications that’s why I advice you people to be focused and selective regarding u’r field of interest and then enquire about all these things I mentioned above before choosing MTech or MS.
Now don’t get scared. It is the fact that there is less chance to get seat here in India, but if you have a good project in u’r hand and if you can manage to get below 150 rank you can make it. Even though it is easy to write gre rather than gate, if you are not from iits or nits it’s very difficult to get admission in to top5o universities for MS. even if you manage to get admission there u may not get funding and assistantship. So in that case iits are better than other colleges which are not top50 universities. So all these things matters before choosing GATE or GRE. So all guys and girls all the best for u’r future and as I’m from electrical and electronics background I can help people from EE,EC in a better way and of course I can help any one up to my knowledge.

Hi!
Your article has been very informative and quite an eye opener! I really appreciate your coming forward and warning the prospective students about their real targets in life! I would like to enlighten you with my story. Its quite complex. I have done engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from a almost average college. I appeared for the GATE exam and didnt get a score. That is when i turned for the preparation of GRE.
My ambition is to work in my own field; that is the computer science. Sadly the story in India is different. Everyone’s aiming for MBA or going into the IT sector. I knew that most of the colleges in India wont be appropriate for M.Tech. and i would have to aim for IITs. but sadly I didnt give in my best. Now i have been placed in Satyam Computers and my parents are suggesting that i join it. But the problem here that i dread the IT sector as once i am into it i would get stuck in it.
From your article i gather that if we havent done our B.Tech. from a good college, then chances of getting a good college in US are also less. That has me worried. I am looking for some quality education so that i can work in the field i am wanting to.
Great article and i really appreciate your effort.

Dear all,
There is a MSc(Engg.) Program in IISc. It is a research program. There is less course work than MTech/ ME programs. You will be working deep into one topic and you will have to publish papers to pass out. This course does not have a ixed time. It can vary from 2 to 3 years, but the average is 2 1/2 years.
There are also MS(research) programs in IIT delhi and IIT madras. But IISc is better for research.
I personally feel MSc(Engg.) is better than ME/ MTech as you will entering into research. It is almost half of a PhD program.
An ME/ MTech according to me, is another version of BE/ BTech as you will be studying lot of subjects. So I think MSc(Engg) is better (more so, if you are aiming for a PhD). You will get a call for MSc(Engg) if you have above 98 percentile in GATE for most departments in IISc. Some departments it is even lesser.
All the best.

Hi!
First I would like to congratulate for your sucess in GATE.
This is an extract from your article about gre vs gate:
“Even though it is easy to write gre rather than gate, if you are not from iits or nits it’s very difficult to get admission in to top5o universities for MS. even if you manage to get admission there u may not get funding and assistantship.”
All through the article you were quite convincing that our field of interest was the most important perspective of further studies but these lines were a little scary rather disheartening .
You yourself were from a okey college of hyderabad ;how do you suppose a stud of an average college could make it to the top universities considering the fact that nothing is impossible.
Please reply.
regards

hi sandeep,
this is sateesh.(sateeshkolapalli@gmail.com)
congrats first of all and thats a good piece of information from you for students who wanna take GRE or GATE. i have completed my third year EEE from BITS,pilani.i am a student who has more or less all the qualities you have mentioned except that i need to take up a good project in my final year.my area of interest is vlsi design for image processing.here’s a question to you dear.kindly reply.
i wish to pursue my research in this area.i am taking GRE this december.can you please suggest me as to what ground work i must do other than the GRE preparation in order to have an edge over other students while getting an admission into an US university.in short in order to get a financial aid, what things i need to take care of from now so that i will have enough preference over other applicants.i mean stuff like paper presentation, PA ship in the institutes, recommendations, etc., please give me a clear view of these things which can keep me atop my competitors.

In case you are a recruiter and carrying out a background check on me, please note that I am not interested in higher studies. I was just asking to know about various avenues.
And ya, I want to join you!
